Life in Accounting

Career Paths

Accounting is a career of opportunity with many different paths. Learn more below about the many diverse careers within the profession that your students can explore.

Public Accounting

If you're the analytical type who can spot the small details from a mile away, loves a fast pace that changes regularly, and wants a mix of clients across all types of industries—public accounting is right up your alley. You'll tackle diverse projects daily, all while making a real impact on businesses and their financial success!

Corporate Accounting

If you love Starbucks, Lululemon, Apple or the Red Sox, corporate accounting might be a fit! No matter which brand tops your list, every one has CPAs on the team, handling the cash flow and keeping the brand strong from the inside out. Plus, you’ll play a key role in shaping financial strategies that drive growth and innovation!

Forensic Accounting

Are you the type who can sniff out something amiss and spot the tiniest details? You could have a career as a forensic accountant, cracking cases for companies around the globe by uncovering dastardly deeds by bad guys trying to make off with the cash. With your keen sleuthing skills, you’ll not only solve mysteries but also help protect organizations from fraud and ensure their financial integrity!

Government Accounting

Do you love building strong community ties and making a difference? In government accounting, you'll work on projects that impact neighborhoods, keep tabs on how taxpayer money is spent, and be the behind-the-scenes hero, ensuring big cities and small towns run like a well-oiled machine where everyone gets the services and support they need!

Nonprofit Accounting

If making a difference in the world is what drives you, becoming a nonprofit CPA is where you belong. No matter your passion—animals to the arts—you'll be the heart and soul behind managing budgets and tracking donations that play a vital role in communities. Plus, you'll collaborate with like-minded individuals who share your commitment to creating positive change!

Environmental Accounting

Making a real impact on the environment takes more than just hugging trees. Every cause takes a lot of green to stay in the black and compliant, which is where environmental accounting comes in. Providing recommendations to help businesses shrink their ecological footprint while keeping costs in check supports both the planet and the organization's bottom line—it's a win-win!

International Accounting

If you're looking to map out a lucrative career where you get to experience different cultures and collect stamps on your passport, international accounting might be the ticket. You'll focus on the accounting practices used by companies operating in multiple countries, helping organizations manage their global financial operations effectively. Blend your passion for travel with your ambitions and watch your career soar!

Financial Planning & Analysis Accounting

Ever dreamed of cracking the code to uncover a hidden story? Financial planning and analysis (FP&A) is all about analyzing the numbers, translating the data and communicating your findings to forecast trends, guide business decisions and influence the company's future trajectory. You're basically a well-paid Sherlock Holmes without the magnifying glass.

Information Systems Accounting

If you're after an in-demand gig that appeals to your tech-savvy side and offers a great salary—information systems accounting is your ace in the hole! This career combines your knack for all things technical with financial expertise to help businesses run smarter and stay secure. Plus, you'll be at the forefront of tackling cybersecurity challenges, making a real impact in today's digital world.

Academia & Research Accounting

If academics are where your heart is, but you still want to rake in the big bucks and geek out over research, academia and research accounting is your perfect match. Using a scientific approach, you’ll investigate accounting practices and principles to uncover how accounting impacts and influences the business world. Plus, you’ll get to shape the future of the profession while doing what you love!

"Being involved with MassCPAs and in particular involved with a committee

has been extremely beneficial to my career as a faculty member at Babson College.  I have been able to  significantly increase my network with faculty from other local colleges and with professionals from a wide range of accounting firms.

In addition, this committee allows me to stay current on the skill necessary to be successful in this ever changing profession.  As a result, I can share this with my colleagues at Babson to make changes in our curriculum to best prepare our students for their future roles and better advise and coach my students through their career journey which is an important and especially rewarding aspect of my job."

— Shay Blanchette, CPA  |  Professor of Practice, Babson College  |  MassCPAs Accounting Pipeline Initiatives Committee Co-Chair

"MassCPAs Accounting For Me? conference is one of my favorite trips

to take with students! They really enjoy experiencing a 'day in the life' of a college student. The highlight is witnessing their joy as they tackle stimulating, hands-on activities, all while receiving guidance from both college students and professors. Beyond a typical college visit, this conference gives them a firsthand glimpse into the intricacies of the accounting profession. It's truly gratifying to see our students actively engaged, enjoying themselves and gaining valuable insights into their potential future careers."
