Election 101: Registering and Voting Early in Massachusetts

September 04, 2024

How do I register to vote?

In Massachusetts, you have three options for registering to vote: online, by mail or in person.

1. Online: If your signature is on file with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, you can register online. This option also allows you to pre-register, update your address, change your name or modify your political party affiliation. Online registrations must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, to be eligible for the November election.

2. By Mail: To register by mail, print, fill out and sign the voter registration form, then mail it to your local election office. The form must be postmarked by Saturday, October 26, 2024. If you are registering for the first time in Massachusetts, include a copy of an ID that shows your name and address. If you do not include this ID, you may need to present it when you vote.

3. In Person: You can also register in person at:

  • Your local town clerk's office, election commission or Board of Registrars
  • The Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth  Elections Division
  • The Secretary of the Commonwealth’s regional offices

In-person registrations are effective immediately and can be done up until Saturday, October 26, 2024.

For full details on voter registration, visit the Secretary of State’s website, and confirm your voter registration status on Massachusetts’s election website.

How do I vote early?

Election Day is November 5, 2024, but in Massachusetts, you can cast your ballot early for statewide elections without needing an excuse. Early voting starts on October 19 and runs through November 1.

You have two options for early voting:

1. In Person: Vote at any early voting location in your city or town. Each community will have at least one early voting site, and local officials will set the schedule and hours. Check with your municipality for specific locations and times.

2. By Mail: For information on voting early by mail, visit the Secretary of State’s Voting by Mail page.

Make sure to take advantage of early voting to ensure your voice is heard!
