Join virtually for our annual Nonprofit Conference! During this conference, we will hear from senior leaders in the Nonprofit Field! This conference is geared towards CPAs, accountants, tax advisers, auditors and other financial managers with not-for-profit clients as well as NFP financial executives and fiscal managers and staff at not-for-profits.

This course qualifies for reimbursement through the state’s Workforce Training Express Fund. Firms/companies with fewer than 50 staff can be reimbursed up to 100% of the cost of training and firms/companies with 50-100 employees can be reimbursed up to 50% of the cost of training. You must register for the course and apply for reimbursement through the Workforce Training Express Fund website a minimum of three weeks prior to the start of the course to be eligible (By January 1st). Jim Klocke

Jim Klocke is the CEO of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network (MNN) where he provides advocacy, capacity-building and public awareness services for nonprofits across the state. Prior to this role, Klocke served as executive vice president of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce.

Jennifer Hutchins, Executive Director, Maine Association of Nonprofits

Jennifer Hutchins

Jennifer Hutchins is the executive director of the Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP), the state’s leading organization supporting the charitable nonprofit sector, with over 1,200 members spanning all 16 counties. She serves on the boards of the National Council of Nonprofits and the Maine Philanthropy Center, as well as the advisory boards of the USM Muskie School of Public Service and the Foundation for Portland Public Schools. Before joining MANP, Hutchins was the executive director of Creative Portland, where she led initiatives to strengthen the city’s creative economy. She previously served as director of communications and external affairs at the USM Muskie School of Public Service for nine years and as marketing director at Portland Stage Company from 1995 to 2000. Earlier in her career, she worked with nonprofit and public institutions in Washington, D.C., and France. In May 2020, Hutchins was appointed to Governor Mills’ Economic Recovery Committee, where she helped develop strategies to address the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this session, we’ll delve into the transformative changes ahead in 2025—including the new administration, anticipated federal tax legislation, and shifting economic and political dynamics—and their implications for the nonprofit, social, and philanthropic sectors. This session will include time for a Q&A.

Alex Romero, Galasso Learning Solutions LLC

Alex Romero

With nearly two decades of expertise in governmental and nonprofit accounting, Alex helps facilitate the development of governmental training programs for Galasso Learning Solutions. Her engaging presentation style, passion for connecting with attendees, and ability to make complex topics accessible have made her a sought-after educator in the field.

Prior to joining GLS, Alex worked for several governmental entities, served as an auditor for a public accounting firm, and earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accounting from Colorado State University. Her contributions to the accounting field have been widely recognized, including being named one of the Top 50 Women in Accounting (2022, 2023) and receiving the AICPA’s Outstanding Young CPA Award in 2022.

Alex serves on AICPA Council and is a member of the Governmental Performance Accountability Committee. She previously served on the Emerging Professional Initiative Committee of the AICPA. She is currently serving as the Vice President of the Educational Foundation Board of Trustees for the Colorado Society of CPAs and is a member of their Young Professional Council. Alex loves Disney and running so in January 2024, she completed the 48.6 mile Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World!

This session will examine the core elements of nonprofit governance, focusing on fiduciary duties, board responsibilities, and best practices for board operations. We will explore the compliance requirements and risk management strategies, including policy development and regulatory obligations of a nonprofit organization. This session will equip you with the knowledge you need to navigate nonprofit governance with confidence and competence.

George Zoglio, 20-20 Services

George Zoglio

After nearly a decade as a contracted 20-20 Services instructor, George joined the management team in the newly created role of Director of Client Accounting & Advisory Services (CAAS) and Professional Development training. In addition to his instructor responsibilities, George is heavily involved in program and business development.

Always known as a “people person,” George brings twenty-five plus years’ experience in the fields of accounting, auditing, budgeting, reporting, financial planning and analysis and taxation. He most recently was the principal of his own consulting firm, Zoglio Financial Management Solutions, where he provided outsourced CFO and controller services. His unique set of skills, knowledge, and expertise – combined with a passion for interpersonal skills as well as continual learning and development – is the perfect match for his role.

A resident of Boston, MA, he is a graduate of Bryant University, receiving both a BS in Accounting as well as an MBA in Management. He is a member of the AICPA and the Massachusetts Society of CPA.

This program will help not-for-profit auditors and advisors identify and respond to instances of NOCLAR to comply with professional standards. The program also discusses recommendations of polices and procedures firms can adopt to document their compliance should an instance of NOCALR arise.

- Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Update

Jeffrey Mechanick

Jeff Mechanick is the assistant director for nonpublic entities at the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) where he provides strategic and technical oversight of all activities involving nonprofit organizations and private companies. In addition, he chairs the FASB’s Nonprofit Advisory Committee, oversees support of the Private Company Council and participates in some of the FASB’s broader outreach activities. Mechanick is also a member of the Technical Advisory Group, the International Financial Reporting for Nonprofit Organizations initiative (#IFR4NPO) and the overall lead staff member for the Blue-Ribbon Panel on Standard Setting for Private Companies and the FASB/IASB Financial Crisis Advisory Group.

In this session, we’ll discuss developments in U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) that are important to nonprofits. Topics include accounting standards updates (ASUs) issued since last year’s conference, implementation matters concerning other recent ASUs, current financial reporting issues and current FASB projects.

Jamie Honigman is president of HR inTune, bringing 20 years of experience in the human capital industry. He has a proven track record of driving success for the companies he has led, with 15 years of executive HR experience. Honigman has held key HR roles at SmithKline Beecham, Comcast, Xerox and TMP Worldwide, overseeing all aspects of HR for large, multinational firms. Since transitioning to human capital consulting 10 years ago, he has held leadership positions at Aon Consulting and CBIZ.

John Rich Jr., McLane Middleton

John Rich Jr.

John Rich, Jr. is a director at McLane Middleton and chair of the firm’s tax department. He advises clients on compliance with ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, COBRA, HIPAA and other federal laws related to employee benefit plans. Additionally, Rich has extensive experience managing fiduciary liability and litigation risks for retirement and health and welfare plans.

Richard Cole

Richard (Rick) Cole, CPA, has more than 25 years of experience serving nonprofit organizations. He is the New York Market industry leader for nonprofit and education, where he focuses on audits and advisory services, and a member of FORVIS Higher Education Center of Excellence, an internal committee that addresses issues important to the higher education industry. Prior to joining the firm in 2019, he worked at the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), where he served as a supervising project manager for almost six years and was coordinator for FASB’s Not-for-Profit Advisory Committee and Private Company Council. Cole was also vice president and controller at a large national museum in New York for seven years and a senior manager with a large international accounting firm where he worked for 14 years. He’s a member of the AICPA’s Not-for-Profit Entities Expert Panel, a lecturer at Columbia University School of Professional Studies and a frequent speaker with the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO), the AICPA and various state CPA societies.

This session will provide a reminder of the requirements of contribution accounting. It will go into details to determine conditions, barriers and right of returns. It will also go into some common areas of misapplication such as donor advised funds. Case studies will be presented.

- Changes to OMB’s Uniform Guidance and Other FAQs

Jennifer Louis

Jennifer Louis, CPA, has more than 14 years of experience in designing and instructing high-quality training programs. In 2003 she joined Emergent Solutions Group, LLC, a consortium of professionals serving organizations on a project- or part-time basis to create a division dedicated to training services. Prior to her role at Emergent Solutions Group, LLC, Louis served as executive vice president and director of training services at AuditWatch, Inc., a premier training and consulting firm serving the audit profession and was a financial/operational audit manager at AARP and an audit manager at Deloitte LLP, where she was an instructor for the firm’s national “Train the Trainers” program.

The OMB updated the Uniform Guidance in 2024, impacting both the administration and audit of federal grants and other awards. This segment will provide details related to the most significant changes to the Uniform Guidance, as well as provide answers to frequently asked questions when planning and performing Single Audits applying that guidance.
