He currently serves as executive director of the Grant Management Institute, providing technical guidance on Uniform Guidance compliance, and is an approved trainer endorsed by the Grant Professionals Association (GPA).
Beyond his professional work, Durst is a board member of Fauquier Sports Foundation Inc., where he helps ensure the organization’s sustainability through ethical governance, financial management and resource development.
Marc Bucalo
Marc Bucalo, CPA, is a co-founder of Award Advisors with over 20 years of experience in the federal grant marketplace. As a subject matter expert in federal grants and contracts, he provides clients with in-depth knowledge of Uniform Guidance and Federal Acquisition Regulations.
Before founding Award Advisors, Bucalo served as compliance director for a national workforce development nonprofit, overseeing government accounting and compliance for a $200 million federal awards portfolio. Fluent in Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), he has extensive experience with federal audits—both as an auditor and an auditee. Notably, he audited $60 billion in incurred costs for a Department of Energy radioactive and hazardous waste management facility.
Nonprofits often turn to their accountants for guidance on navigating the complexities of federal grant compliance, but for many, this is unfamiliar territory. In this session, we’ll provide a crash course on federal grant regulations, equipping CPAs and accounting professionals with the foundational knowledge to advise clients effectively. You’ll learn key compliance obligations, common risks and strategies to mitigate financial and regulatory challenges. Additionally, we’ll review Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) and explore practical risk mitigation strategies—such as internal controls and policy implementation—to help you offer valuable guidance while safeguarding your firm’s reputation.
This session is available to registrants only.
