CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

Over the last couple of weeks, I got a small case of whiplash from reading two articles about how the accounting profession embraces and supports women in their ranks. The first was an article in the Wall Street Journal talking about how the Big 4 firms are working hard to increase the number of women in leadership roles but only 11% of the engagement partners for the audits of S&P 100 companies are women. Then yesterday, I saw this article that said the Big 4 and other top accounting firms are among Working Mother's 2018 "100 Best Companies" list. Congratulations to our firms on this list!

What's the takeaway? Our hearts are in the right place; we are making strides in this area, but we still have a way to go. I have seen firms throughout the Commonwealth take meaningful action, including offering flexible work arrangements and partnerships for part-timers to try to retain and develop women. We also need to do more to combat the unconscious bias that keeps us from achieving true parity for women and minorities.

At the Society level, we are working to help our members in this area. We recently launched our Women's Mentoring Circles, a program designed as a place for women to support each other and their development in accounting. On Monday, we'll kick off our Diversity Advisory Council to learn how the Society can play a bigger role in supporting underrepresented groups in the profession. And on October 25, we'll discuss this in greater detail at our Women's Leadership Summit where we'll also celebrate our 2018 Women to Watch. I will keep you updated as each of these initiatives progresses!

Also this week, we were gratified to see that our efforts and the efforts of others have paid off in the form of some relief to our members in the Lawrence, North Andover and Andover areas that were impacted by the tragic explosions and fires. You are all still in our thoughts, and I hope you are returning quickly to business as usual!

Have a great weekend!
