CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

Congratulations to our public accounting members on finishing a long, unusual and stressful tax season! I hope you can enjoy some well-earned rest and relaxation. While many of you were heads down, the Society has been hard at work advocating on your behalf. I’m excited to update you on a couple of initiatives we have been working on these last few weeks. As you know, Massachusetts faces a $6 billion budget shortfall spanning fiscal years 2020 to 2022 with no promise of federal funding to help close that gap. Leading a coalition of business community partners, the Society compiled a list of business tax principles that encourages legislators to ensure any tax changes be temporary and any new revenues, cuts and borrowing decrease as the economy begins to recover. I am excited to have a seat at the table as we work with business community partners and elected leaders on Beacon Hill to see that all Massachusetts residents and businesses are set up for success as we begin to rebuild.

It’s equally important to help bring federal money back to Massachusetts. States and local governments face a collective budget gap of upwards of $555 billion for fiscal years 2020 to 2022. With that in mind, I solicited my peers at state societies across the country to sign a letter we drafted urging congressional leaders to expedite additional financial relief for state and local governments. I’m proud to report that 27 chief executives representing nearly 270,000 CPAs answered our call. I’m hopeful Congress will work together to pass a federal relief bill for state and local governments so Massachusetts legislators won’t have to resort to tax increases and cuts to important state programs.

I am proud of our leadership in these efforts and of the coalitions we’ve built with partners in Massachusetts and at state societies across the country. By leveraging the trusted brand of CPAs, our connections with business leaders and joining together with our peers, we are positioned to make a larger impact with elected officials in Massachusetts and in Congress. Thank you for allowing us to do this work on your behalf.

I hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend!
