CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

As you all know, February is Black History Month. While the Society’s commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive profession is a year-round priority, we plan to take some extra time this month to join our colleagues from across the country in celebrating and honoring all of those who have contributed to the progress we have all made so far.

This year is a particularly special time as 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the first African American CPA, John W. Cromwell Jr. As the first, John took this responsibility to heart and spent his life continuing to break down barriers and lifting up countless future Black CPAs who followed. His contributions to the profession and his loyalty to the many institutions that helped support him throughout his career continue to inspire us all.

In that spirit, and with a sincere thanks to the financial support and generosity of MSCPA member Eva Lohrer, CPA, we are excited to announce the John W. Cromwell Jr. CPA Memorial Scholarship. This new scholarship will award $5,000 through the MSCPA Educational Foundation to a Black/African American student who has demonstrated academic excellence and financial need in the pursuit of a career in accounting in Massachusetts. This scholarship is one part of our ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

We are excited to continue to honor John’s legacy each year in this meaningful way. To learn more about John and his impact on the profession, please click here.

Have a great weekend!
