CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

Happy New Year! After an exceptionally challenging 2020, 2021 is presenting its own strains. The acceptance of free and fair elections and the peaceful transition of power are key hallmarks of our representative democracy. The Society joins with what I am sure is the sense of our membership in condemning the violence and lawlessness we witnessed at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, and we share in the hope that the tragic events will spark the same sense of community and resiliency that Americans of all political parties and walks of life have displayed over the past 10 months.

In brighter news for the new year, Kara Kieran is officially the Society’s new chief operating officer, and she’s already doing a great job! This is the time of year that we start our annual planning and budgeting process, and Kara’s knowledge is invaluable in making sure we get it right. I’m looking forward to announcing some expansions of our most popular programs for next year, including the HR Hotline and our member roundtables.

I’m also really pleased to report that on the last day of the 2019-2020 legislative session, the Legislature enacted our accountancy modernization bill, a major legislative win for the Society. We are incredibly grateful to all of you who worked with us over the years and contacted your legislator in support of this bill — you helped position the accounting industry for success in this ever-changing professional world.

Thanks also to our own Zach Donah, senior directory of advocacy, and Larry Liuzzo, government affairs manager, for their work on seeing this through. For a summary of the bill and for other legislation-based news this week, read our latest Legislative Brief.

Finally, traditionally at this time of the year we do a big data management push so that we can make sure all of our members get the most timely and accurate information from us. Please check your profile and make sure we have your email address and alternative email address accurately updated. Home mailing addresses are also super helpful.

Have a great weekend!
