CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

It’s hard to believe that we only have one big conference left before busy season — our Nonprofit Virtual Conference January 21-22.

Thanks to a great slate of speakers and topics, our annual State Tax Virtual Conference this week was a hit. I always love to hear from the Department of Revenue — especially ahead of tax season — and I appreciate the opportunity to hear the perspectives of Karl Frieden, with the Council on State Taxation, and Joe Crosby, with MultiState Associates, Inc., on trends in tax policy at the state and national level. I really enjoyed my conversation with State Sen. Adam Hinds, and I am pretty sure I heard him agree with me that it makes no sense to impose a tax on professional services! Thanks to all who attended and a special thanks to our Learning and Development team for another great event.

We do have a few interesting things happening before you go “heads down” for busy season. We are going to be holding two webinars in the first week in February explaining the MSCPA pooled employer plan (PEP) — one on Monday, February 1, at 8:00 a.m. and one on Thursday, February 4, at 3:00 p.m. If you are a sole practitioner or a smaller firm (maybe fewer than 25 employees) please try to attend one of these sessions. Through our group purchasing power, we will have the ability to offer you a retirement plan that was previously only available to larger enterprises. If you have considered this as a staff benefit but were deterred by the cost or the amount of work, this could really change things up.

We know mental health issues continue to be a major issue for our members. With that in mind, we are offering a Mental Health and Stress webinar on Tuesday, January 19, at 12:00 p.m. that will be free for members and offer one CPE credit. We also have a night of fun, networking and firm camaraderie planned at our January 21 Virtual Trivia Night. We have no cap on registrations, so come one come all!

Finally, we will be closed on Monday, January 18, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There are so many amazing quotes attributed to Rev. King, but today I am reminded that he said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

Have a great weekend!
