CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

Last week, our friends at Integrated Partners held a webinar explaining the new pooled employee retirement plan (PEP) exclusively for MSCPA members. We’ve been working on this for a while, since the PEP rules came out of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and not all the rules were clear.

Things have settled down now, and we are able to offer this great benefit to our members. When you join PEP, your retirement assets will be pooled with others for purposes of investment. This means that you will get the lower management costs previously available only to larger firms and that there will be a single filing. This will greatly cut down on red tape that you have to endure to provide this great benefit for you and your staff.

Please contact me if you have any questions. I’m hoping lots of our members take the time to understand this benefit. It’s a new approach, but it represents an opportunity we at the Society are very excited to be able to provide our members.

PEP is among several benefits we’ve developed over the past few years to help our sole practitioners and smaller firms. Please also check out our HR Hotline, a completely free and confidential service that allows you to have 30-minute consultations with Laurie LaBrie, SPHR, SHRM-SCP. Many of you have met Laurie at the New England Practice Management (MAP) Virtual Conference and elsewhere. She has also done free HR webinars for our members and written some great articles for SumNews — she actually has a webinar and a SumNews article coming in January, so look out for those!

Also, check out our January small firms roundtables for a great opportunity to talk to your peers about everything on your mind. Finally, a few years ago we introduced the small-firm level (fewer than 10 employees) for our Education Foundation’s Scholarships. For $500, you can get the same recognition as larger firms and make a real difference in the life of a college accounting student who could use the extra help. You can learn more and donate here.

We are always looking for ways we can help all our members, including those in small firms. Please feel free to contact me directly with any ideas.

Happy Chanukah to those of you who celebrate. Have a great weekend!
