CEO Corner

Dear Hannah,

As you may already know, the Society administers a periodic survey to gauge current and anticipated taxpayer behavior to help the Department of Revenue (DOR) predict monthly revenue collections. State officials are often unsure of taxpayer behavior in a given year or during a particular timeframe as it relates to capital gains, bonus activity, safe harbor or corporate investment, and your advice can make a difference as these leaders plan for the year ahead. Your expert input also elevates the CPA brand and helps position CPAs as valued thought leaders in the Massachusetts business community.

The feedback we've received so far has been helpful in highlighting some major changes that are expected to come. Based on past surveys and FY 18 revenue numbers, we already know members encouraged clients to overpay 2017 taxes due to federal tax law changes; however, the survey is currently showing that will not happen for the 2018 tax year. Also compared to last year, 80% of respondents expect their clients' estimated payments to stay the same or increase slightly. We're also seeing that over the next 12 months, 50% of respondents expect their clients' hiring pattern to stay the same, whereas last year 50% of respondents expected their clients' hiring to increase by up to 10%. It's important to note that these numbers are not final, and the more responses we receive, the more accurate and helpful our results will be to state officials.

Please provide your input on client trends, as a representative sample of all Massachusetts taxpayers. Please note that no specific member information will be used for this report. This poll will close on Tuesday, November 20 at 5:00 p.m.

Thank you and have a great weekend!

MSCPA President/CEO
