CEO Corner

Dear INSERT_FIRST_NAME,

The IRS will begin accepting and processing 2021 tax returns on Monday, January 24, officially kicking off tax season 2022. As you may have seen, in her annual report to Congress last week, the National Taxpayer Advocate, Erin Collins, has a warning as you head into busy season – the IRS is in crisis, so brace for another tough year.

Collins noted a few striking statistics: since 2010, the IRS has seen a nearly 20% cut in funding and an equally large reduction in staff. At the same time, and exacerbated by the global pandemic, the workload has increased 19%, swamping the phone lines and creating a backlog of returns and supplemental return information.

The issues at the agency won’t be solved overnight, but we continue to engage our Congressional Delegation and advocate in coordination with the AICPA for additional funding to address longstanding technology and staffing issues.

There are; however, a few measures the agency can do administratively to provide immediate relief – suspend compliance actions that are generated by the more than $6 million in unprocessed individual returns, 2.8 million unprocessed business returns, nearly 3 million unprocessed amended returns and approximately 4.7 million unopened and unanswered pieces of correspondence. To date, the IRS has been reluctant to use this authority, but we’ve urged Congress to consider legislation to force their hand and will continue to do so.

This afternoon, we joined our colleagues from across the country in asking our Congressional Delegation to co-sign a bipartisan letter to the U.S. Treasury Sectary, Janet Yellen, calling on her to direct the IRS to move forward with these immediate relief measures. We will keep you posted on our progress and the steps you can take to join our advocacy efforts in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, if we can be of immediate assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Have a great weekend!
