Dear Hannah,
I am writing from Phoenix where it is 110 degrees! This is the Interchange Conference where state society
staff learn from association experts and each other what we can do better to serve and be relevant to our members.
In Massachusetts, we are ahead of the curve. For example, our strategy of changing
the focus of our educational programs to move from compliance to competency is absolutely spot on. We are hearing around the country that getting the
required hours means nothing if you're not getting the skills and knowledge you need to better serve your clients. There's also talk of using
technology similar to Pokemon Go to create educational opportunities that are more flexible, more customized and more fun. This is probably not just
around the corner, but not unrealistic at some point.
Other trends that we need to respond to include the aging of the workforce, increasing complexity and specialization and globalization. Lurking
behind all of this is the potential for disruption. Our profession never wants to be in the position of the taxi industry who never thought Uber would
catch on. We all need to make sure that we are protecting the profession in traditional ways, but also alert to forces outside the profession so that
we always remain relevant and successful. Have a
great weekend!
