When I think about the
trends impacting the profession, I think about two factors: change and the pace of change. At the AICPA spring council meeting, Barry Melancon, CEO of
the AICPA, confidently stated that the profession would be unrecognizable in five to 10 years due to advances in technology, robotics and artificial
intelligence. What does that mean for the skills and competencies that need to be taught to accounting students? Critical thinking and problems
solving skills are equally as important as technical skills for new hires.
The Society has to educate the colleges and universities more on the changing needs in the profession. One way to do
that is through college advisory boards. Our members on these boards will help develop a consistent dialogue between academics and the profession. If
