Dear Hannah,

There is an important update in the fight to get Massachusetts to conform its due dates to recent changes made by the Feds. In 2015, the federal government changed the due dates for corporate and partnership tax returns. In part, these new changes, which will apply to the 2016 tax returns prepared during the 2017 tax filing season, switch the due date for C corporation returns from March 15 to April 15, and the due date for partnerships from April 15 to March 15. Massachusetts is one of only two states that has failed to pass legislation that would create conformity with the new federal due dates. The MSCPA has been fighting hard to get these changes made, and there is a provision in the Governor’s supplemental budget to do just that, but at this time that provision is unfunded.

The DOR announced yesterday that they will waive late-file penalties for corporate returns filed on or before the federal tax return due date. For more information, please click here.

The Society continues to lobby Legislature to pass legislation to make this important change which is still needed despite the DOR’s directive. To assist us in doing so, contact your legislator!

Speaking of taxes, we are all so proud of MSCPA member, Fed Tax Committee Chair and incoming Board member Kate Seekell, CPA, MST who was terrific on NECN’s Tax Tuesday earlier this week. Check it out here. Awesome job, Kate!

Have a great weekend!
