CEO MESSAGE

Dear Hannah,

One of the strengths of the Society is the tremendous diversity in our membership, and we offer programs and networking events to all of our member demographics. However, one area where we have come up short is serving our members in industry. To help to rectify that, last year I put together an advisory council of corporate finance professionals including past board chair Stu Benton, current board member Katie Durant, incoming board member Francisco Oliveira and Mike Daskiewicz, Laura Felice, Peter Henderson, Maura Hughes, Melanie Kavanagh and Susan Lowe.

With their help and with additional information we gained from a recent member survey, we have put together an exciting offering – the CPAs in Business Summit. The summit will cover an update on the economy, what corporate finance professionals need to know about big data, hot topics in accounting and four hours of case study-based ethics. To find out more about the summit, click here. I’m very excited about this event – and it’s just one of many to come! If you have any suggestions for ways we can better serve you, please let me know.

Happy Spring! Have a great weekend!

MSCPA President/CEO

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

MA Legislature Passed Federal Tax Due Date Conformity Proposal
After months of lobbying and negotiating, and thanks to the hundreds of members who lent their support, the MSCPA is happy to report that the Massachusetts Legislature has adopted language to conform to the new federal tax return due dates. While the change won’t take effect until January 2018, we hope members are aware of the late-file penalty waiver provided by the DOR in TIR 17-3 for the current tax season.

Baker Administration Considers Alternative Employer-based Health Insurance Assessment
Amid pushback from the business community on his proposal to assess employers a $2,000 fee per employee on businesses that do not cover at least 80% of full-time equivalents under the company’s health insurance, Governor Charlie Baker is floating another plan to offset steep increases in health care cost. The revised plan would temporarily increase the Employer Medical Assistance Contribution (EMAC), which is supported by businesses with six or more employees. The proposal would also temporarily freeze unemployment insurance rates.
