Dear Hannah,
Earlier this week I attended the AICPA’s regional council meeting in New York with leaders from our Board, AICPA members and council members and CEOs from other state societies. We spent the day talking about changes in the profession and how we can help members adapt to those changes. The majority of our discussion centered on two major topics: the future of audit and tax reform.
For the future of audit, we discussed the new skills that CPAs will need to adapt to sweeping changes in technology (AI, blockchain, etc.). AICPA President and CEO Barry Melancon discussed modifying both college curriculum and the CPA Exam to prepare future CPAs to enter this new, technologically-progressive era. Coincidentally, an article I wrote on this topic was published in Accounting Today this week – you can read it here.
Regarding tax reform, a couple of the most relevant insights were that there will be a short-term spike in compliance work (while everyone struggles to figure things out), but that may reverse in the long-term, meaning that CPAs need to shift their focus from compliance to planning. Also, there is going to be room for a great deal of advocacy at both the state and federal levels as the new law shakes out.
I always enjoy council meetings as a chance to focus on the big picture for our profession. I’ll be sharing my insights when I visit firms throughout the year. If you’d like me to stop by your firm, let me know!
Have a great weekend!
Amy Pitter

New Webpage for DOR Issues |
The Department of Revenue (DOR) recently launched a new tax practitioner webpage that includes real-time updates on issues with processes, notices or other systems that may impact taxpayers. The DOR plans to collect this information directly from practitioners as issues arise through a newly created, practitioner-only email: taxprofeedback@dor.state.ma.us.
The DOR is urging practitioners to only use this email for issues impacting multiple taxpayers. Individual issues should still be resolved through MassTaxConnect, or through the DOR’s contact center at 617.887.6367. |
