CEO CORNER

Dear Hannah,

In the middle of tax season and back-to-back snowstorms, here’s something to look forward to: our Party on the Pier! I’m thrilled to announce that registration is now open for the 2018 MSCPA Annual Meeting and Networking Reception: Party on the Pier, which will be held at the stunning New England Aquarium’s IMAX Theatre on May 3.

This event will bring together over 200 CPAs and accounting professionals from across the state for an evening of networking, cocktails and fun. Our Party on the Pier also kicks off our new membership year by recognizing newly-certified CPAs, welcoming our new Board of Directors, acknowledging outgoing Board members and presenting a State of the Society update. Whether you’re looking to build your network, or simply for a fun night out, this is the place to socialize and meet new contacts while enjoying views of Boston’s historic harbor and skyline.
For details and registration, please visit our website.

Have a great weekend and Saint Patrick’s Day - may the luck of the Irish be with you!

Amy Pitter
MSCPA President/CEO

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

Refunds Changed from Direct Deposit to Paper Check
The DOR recently released a number of income tax refunds via paper check where direct deposit had been requested on the tax returns. The DOR sometimes changes the refund delivery method from direct deposit to paper check as an additional security measure, and this action was taken in an effort to honor these early refund requests quickly. These releases will happen periodically through the filing season.

Corporate Estimated Payments and Prior Year Overpayment Credit
Massachusetts law changed this year [TIR 17-5] requiring C corporations to file returns by the 15th day of the fourth month after the close of the taxable year, lining up with the federal return. No changes were made to estimated tax payment due dates for corporations, but it’s important to check dates for overpayment credits to avoid penalties. You can find more information on estimated payment due dates and prior year overpayment credit dates on the website.
