Dear Hannah,
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of participating in a HUBweek panel on “Diversity in Business: How to bring meaningful change.” I am thrilled that the MSCPA was a player in what’s becoming Boston’s signature event for thought leadership. My three big takeaways were:
1) Minority business owners are on the rise. The most recent U.S. Census data shows a 38% increase in minority-owned businesses since 2007, and eight million businesses in the U.S. are now led by minorities. This affects everything from staffing to client service.
2) Inclusion is the key to retention of diverse professionals. It starts with making the “uncomfortable comfortable” – we need to start talking openly about race, ethnicity and gender, and bring our authentic selves into the workplace.
3) We all have unconscious biases, and we need to do a better job of managing them. It starts with reengineering our processes, like removing names from resumes so Bob doesn’t have an advantage over Kareem. Consider this: bringing diversity into the workplace is like diet and exercise; we all want a magic pill, but it’s something we have to work hard at every day over a lifetime.
Overall, the event was terrific, and sparked conversations that will continue in the years ahead. Thank you to everyone who attended, and a special thanks to PwC for hosting at their beautiful office in the Seaport District!
Have a great weekend!
