Dear Hannah,
Summer is a quieter time at the
Society as many of our members are taking some well-deserved
vacation. One thing that does not slow down at all is our
critical work building the accounting pipeline.
Many of you are aware that in May we awarded 44 scholarships
and 17 CPA Exam vouchers totaling $170,500! While supporting
college accounting students is essential, most students have
made basic career decisions before they even complete their
college applications. This summer, our Accounting Careers
Exploratory (ACE) Leadership Program returns in-person –
for the first time since the pandemic!
ACE is a five-day, camp-style program focused on accounting
awareness and career readiness. It will be held at Suffolk
University and includes workshops to introduce accounting and
explore the many career possibilities, and it helps students
develop interview and career-readiness skills. Highlights
include:
- A session on appropriate dress,
capped off by a facilitated shopping trip to Macy’s
- Visits to firms and Fenway Park
to hear from CFO Tim Zue
- Our annual case competition
where students develop a new business idea using the
information they learned throughout the week and present
their plans to a panel of volunteer judges
Just as our scholarships
are made possible through the generosity of our members, ACE is
happening because of sponsorships from BDO USA, LLP, Grant
Thornton and Deloitte LLP.
This summer, we also finalized a partnership with Bristol
Community College that builds on the success of our innovation
pathways partnership with Middlesex Community College, which
launched in the fall of 2021. These programs give high school
students an awareness of accounting as a great career, as well
as a
cost-effective jump start to their college careers. Thanks
to a sponsorship from BerryDunn, we can pair this work with a training
program for high school educators.
Thinking ahead to fall, we will visit high schools in-person
once again. We have great materials and a curriculum available
if you’d like to visit your alma mater or neighborhood high
school for a career day or other event. Please contact Allie
Orlando via email
for details.
Finally, please don’t forget to take
our membership satisfaction survey by EOD today.
This simple, one question survey guides us in providing the
right programs for our most important people – you!
