CEO Corner
|
Dear INSERT_FIRST_NAME,
I recently had the pleasure of attending the AICPA’s regional council meeting with our council members and Zach Donah and Kara Kieran from MassCPAs. It was a virtual event, but we gathered at LGA, LLP’s Chestnut Hill office to discuss the topics and participate as a group.
The overarching topic continues to be change. In addition to changes in technology (which were greatly accelerated during COVID), AICPA CEO Barry Melancon, CPA, CGMA, focused on how firms are evolving with changes in services, clients and business models – including growth in both traditional and non-traditional mergers and acquisitions. Here are my top three takeaways:
- The fallout from mergers is resulting in the creation of new firms, as partners of acquired firms do not want to be part of the new regime.
- While advisory services really took off during COVID, Barry sees Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) as an area that is “ours to lose.” As a profession, we need to be on the forefront of the attest function as the area inevitably grows.
- ESG also must be part of a “rebranding” of the profession to high school and college students who are growing less interested in accounting and the Exam. This is the biggest risk the profession is facing, and it will require thoughtful and aggressive actions to make sure that we have the candidate pool needed to keep the profession thriving long into the future.
We will be discussing these topics, and ways MassCPAs can help, with firm and business leaders throughout the year – so stay tuned for updates.
It was great being with our team, but I look forward to finally returning to in-person events this spring. I hope you’ll attend our signature member-wide networking event on May 10 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge. Connect 2022, formerly the Annual Meeting, is a special event filled with networking, live entertainment and spectacular views of the Charles River and Boston Skyline. Have a great weekend!
