Dear INSERT_FIRST_NAME,
As we enter another busy season (kicking off with a snowstorm), there may be good news on the horizon. Earlier this week, Governor Charlie Baker released his final state budget. The Governor included several tax policy proposals in his $48.5 billion plan, including two major MassCPAs priorities – updating the income tax conformity date from 2005 to 2022 and raising the estate tax threshold from $1 million to $2 million. We’re grateful that the Governor and his administration are prioritizing these issues. While we recognize they have a long way to go before becoming law, we are committed to working with the House and the Senate to convey the support of MassCPAs members.
I also want to update you on our efforts related to IRS service levels. A letter was sent to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig outlining the types of relief we need, including halting automated collections, providing penalty relief and expediting processing. The House letter has 191 signatures – one of the largest in recent memory – and the Senate letter has 25. We’re grateful for the support of Congressman Neal, Congresswoman Clark, Congressman McGovern, Congressman Lynch and Congresswoman Trahan. The window to sign on to this bipartisan letter was short, so we’ve followed up with the rest of the delegation, urging them to push this effort across other channels.
Yesterday, the IRS announced partial relief for taxpayers, by stopping some notices to taxpayers for filing errors. While this is a good first step, there is more the IRS should do, so we will continue the fight for administrative relief – and you can help. If you have compelling stories about how IRS backlogs have disrupted your clients’ lives, please share them here. These examples will help us continue to pressure Congress and the IRS to provide relief, and we will update you on our progress.
And, speaking of busy season – burnout is real! Our fitness challenge is one way to prioritize your health this winter and it starts next Tuesday, February 1. You can register here.
Have a great weekend – don’t forget to load up on bread and milk!
